The Department of Linguistics Applied to Science and Technology is of cross-cutting nature, and thus it is in charge of teaching modern languages in all UPM Centres. It consists of different departmental sections, including the DEPARTMENTAL SECTION OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio.
The Department teaches the compulsory subject of English for Professional and Academic Communication in all official undergraduate's degrees at the UPM. It is also responsible for undertaking optional subjects, both in English and in other modern languages. In addition, it organizes and manages the Level B2 English language certification process (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), which is a compulsory requirement for qualifying for an undergraduate's degree in the UPM.
Besides, research has played an important role within the Departmental Section. Proof of this was its participation on the creation of the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes (AELFE) and the fact that they were pioneers in implementing the methodological principles of Applied Linguistics.
