PhD in Aerospace Engineering (Royal Decree RD 99/2011)

The PhD Program in Aerospace Engineering is aligned with the guidelines of the Bologna Process, which are outlined in Royal Decree 99/2011. The relevance of the academic and research activities of the proposed program is evident due to the numerous applications and the social, economic, and scientific impact of the aerospace sector, coupled with its multidisciplinary content. For this reason, the PhD Program offers a wide range of opportunities for the completion of the Doctoral Thesis, with its six main lines of research and the teams that support them.

Branch of knowledge: Engineering and Architecture

Duration of studies:

  • Full-time: 3 years+ 1-year extension + 1-year exceptional extension
  • Part-time: 5 years + 2-year extension

Research areas

  • Space Missions and Space Vehicles Analysis and Design
  • Physics of Plasmas and Technological Applications
  • Fluid Mechanics. Heat Transfer and Combustion
  • Modelling and Simulation for Aerospace Systems
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aerospace Production and Materials.

Admission to a PhD Program at UPM will be governed by the specific criteria of the program, as long as the general admission requirements of UPM are met. In general, to access a PhD program, it is necessary to hold a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and a Master's degree. The Academic Committee of the Program is the body that decides on the admission of each student who applies to enter the program. Once admission has been granted, the Academic Committee of the Program may, on an individual basis, require the completion of certain additional training.

Know more about the Doctoral Programme in Aerospace Engineering

The PhD Program in Aerospace Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is an adaptation to the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011 of January 28th, based on the current PhD Program in Aerospace Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

The previous program had a quality mention, regulated according to Royal Decree 56/2005, whose quality mention was later renewed (MCD2007-00145), and the program was verified in accordance with Royal Decree 1393/2007 by the University Council of the Ministry of Education (in its session of January 22, 2010, Resolution dated February 24, 2010).

The PhD Program in Aerospace Engineering (RD 1393/2007) received the Mention of Excellence from the Ministry of Education for the academic years 2011-2012 to 2013-2014 (Resolution of October 6, 2011, from the General Secretariat of Universities, Ministry of Education, Ref. MEE2011-0156).

The basic admission requirement for the PhD was having completed the research pathway of the Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering or holding the Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) in one of the programs under RD 778/1998 offered at ETSI Aeronáuticos, or similar qualifications. The Doctoral Committee was responsible for approving admissions by evaluating the suitability of the student's academic record and prior training to the requested research line, their thesis project, and the corresponding report from the proposed thesis supervisor.

The new regulations outlined two distinct periods for every PhD Program: the training period and the research period. This approach integrated a comprehensive doctoral training program, enhancing the outcomes of research and knowledge generation. Subsequently, changes were made to adapt these postgraduate studies to the new academic structure under RD 1393/2007. These changes included the incorporation of the training period through a series of courses and seminars focused on research, which were part of the master's program associated with the PhD program; the definition of access and admission requirements in accordance with RD 1393/2007; and compliance with the regulations defined in the PhD model approved by the UPM Governing Council on January 29, 2009.
